Sometimes. I find that certain images call for different treatments. This was the case after I finished Biatime. I uploaded it and stared at it for a while. It seemed to be telling me it wanted to be a painting. I suspect this is because of all the smooth, simple objects in the drawing.
So, I opened the original Illustrator file in Photoshop and did a lot of erasing – no small feat when you look at all the cross hatching and scribbles in the original – until I had outlines I could work with. Then, layer upon layer, I blocked in the basic colours and added detail, starting with the background and moving toward the front. Then final tweaks and retouches brought me to this result.
Thus far, I have only posted artwork I have created using Illustrator. I know it seems odd using vector software to make the sketchy, detailed line drawings such as those tagged “Bliggamarole,” but it is because each line or shape is an editable object, that the ability to resize and change the quality of each gives you the freedom to experiment so easily.
I admit I experience some awkwardness when I switch between the two programs, some things, even keyboard commands are identical, some are only similar and other things are totally different. One thing that drives me crazy is that “ctrl z” is used for all undos in Illustrator, but in Photoshop, for multiple undos, you must use “ctrl alt z”.
Eventually I hope to get back to traditional canvas and oil – and then there won’t be any “undos”…
This painting took over two weeks to complete due to work, and nasty flu bugs running rampant through the house. Hopefully things are under control now, and I plan to go blog visiting this weekend to catch up on what everyone’s up to these days!
